Nanjing Feiyan Piston Ring Factory was founded in 1958 and is located on Zhongshan Road, Lishui County, Nanjing. It is one of the most influential and competitive enterprises in the domestic piston ring industry. The original production base of the project is scattered and the internal workshop is old. In order to further improve production efficiency and shorten the production cycle, relocation and transformation have been carried out.
The use of corten steel, a new material, is not only the renovation of the site, but also the gentle transformation of the feelings of the times to the new culture.
Feiyan Piston Ring Factory, as a generation’s memory and emotion carrier, was originally designed to show the traces of these times in new use on the basis of respecting the context of the times, in order to show the space is transformed into a container of time.
How to deal with the relationship between tradition and emerging is the key to the project design. The renovation design retains the traditional structural space and wall texture, and adds new materials such as glass bricks and
corten steel plates as the space separation. In terms of color, texture, and brightness, the traditional and emerging functional spaces are compared.
The team re-integrated and transformed the original building space, and re-planned the underutilized, decentralized old-fashioned building into a high-quality office space.
In order to prevent the expressiveness of the materials from interfering with the exhibits, the design chose materials with different textures and living black, white and gray tones. For example, the brushed cement wall, corten steel plate, black steel plate, etc. that divide the office area form a dialogue between the new and the old, delicate and rough, with the original concrete beams and columns of the building.
Feiyan Cultural Center combines historical context with a sense of future science and technology. Here, the new and the old, the tradition and the future, constitute a sense of tension and dialogue.
